VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE:
A. GENERAL:
1. THE VARIABLE TORQUE AC DRIVE SHALL CONSIST OF AN ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY CONTROLLER CAPABLE
OF DRIVING A STANDARD AC INDUCTION MOTOR.
2. THE ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY CONTROLLER SHALL CONVERT 460 VOLTS + 10 TO -5% THREE PHASE, 60HZ,
UTILITY POWER TO AN ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY OUTPUT FOR SPEED CONTROL FROM 10% TO 100% OF BASE
SPEED.
B. BASIC DESIGN:
1. THE VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE (VFD) SHALL PRODUCE ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY ADJUSTABLE VOLTAGE
OUTPUT THROUGH A THREE STEP OPERATION. THE FIRST STAGE SHALL CONVERT THE AC UTILITY POWER TO
A FIXED VOLTAGE DC THROUGH THE USE OF A FULL WAVE DIODE BRIDGE. THIS SHALL BE DONE TO PROVIDE
AN INPUT POWER FACTOR OF .95 THROUGHOUT THE SPEED RANGE, AND ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR
ISOLATION TRANSFORMERS AND /OR SUPPRESSION EQUIPMENT DUE TO LINE NOISE GENERATION. DRIVE
EMPLOYING A PHASE CONTROLLED FRONT END WILL NOT BE ACCEPTABLE.
(A). THE SECOND STAGE SHALL CONVERT THE FIXED VOLTAGE DC TO AN ADJUSTABLE LEVEL OF DC
THROUGH THE USE OF TRANSISTORIZED CHOPPER.
(B). THE THIRD STAGE SHALL CONVERT THE ADJUSTABLE LEVEL OF DC INTO A SIX STEP ADJUSTABLE
VOLTAGE AND FREQUENCY FOR SPEED CONTROL THROUGH THE USE OF A TRANSISTORIZED
INVERTER.
(C). THE VFDS SHALL INCLUDE INPUT LINE REACTORS.
2. ALL POWER SEMICONDUCTORS SHALL BE LOCATED ON A COMMON HEAT SINK FOR MODULARITY AND EASE
OF SERVICE. THE DRIVER CIRCUITS FOR BOTH INVERTER TRANSISTOR AND CHOPPER SHALL BE CONTAINED
ON A SINGLE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD WITH LEDS TO INDICATE FIRING SEQUENCE. THIS SHALL BE DONE FOR
MODULARITY AND EASE OF TROUBLE SHOOTING.
3. REGULATIONS, PART 15, SUBPART J, REGARDING RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE, AND CARRY THE FCC
COMPLIANCE LABEL FOR CLASS A DIGITAL DEVICES.
(A). LINE NOISE CREATED SHALL BE NO GREATER THAN 3% HARMONIC DISTORTION AND NO MORE
THAN A 16,400 VOLT- MICROSECOND COMMUNICATION NOTCH AREA, IN ACCORDANCE WITH IEEE
STANDARD 519, 1981, FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS.
4. THE CONTROL LOGIC FOR THE DRIVE SHALL CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING CUSTOMER ADJUSTMENTS:
