No. 181-01-11329RESOLUTION NO.181-01-11329 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DESIGNATE A SPECIFIC PUBLIC RIGHT- OF-WAY TO MARJORY WILLIAMS SCRIVENS WHO WAS THE FIRST WOMAN POSTAL CARRIER IN THE COUNTY TO WORK FOR THE SOUTH MIAMI BRANCH AND TO DISBURSE THE SUM OF $400.00 TO MIAMI DADE COUNTY FOR THE INSTALLATION OF SAID SIGNS AND CFIARGING THE DISBURSEMENT TO ACCOUNT NO.1730-541-4640, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS OF STREETS AND PARKWAYS". WHEREAS,this Commission wishes to recognize thefirst woman postal carrier inthe county to work forthe South Miami Branch,and; WHEREAS,co-designate SW 70th Street from 59th Place to S.Dixie Highway,and: WHEREAS,her groundbreaking career opened the door for women inthe community;and WHEREAS,the Commission wouldliketohonorthe memory of thisSouthMiamipostal carrier with this co-designation. NOW THEREFORE,beit RESOLVED bythe MAYOR AND CITY COMMISION of the CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA: Sectionl.The foregoing resolution is sponsored bythe entire City Commission. Section 2.The City Manager be,andis hereby authorized to disburse thesum of $400.00 to Miami-Dade County forthe installation of the street signs. Section 3.This resolution shall become effective immediately after adoption hereof. BACKGROUND ThelateMarjory Williams Scrivens wasthefirstwomanpostalcarrierinthecountytoworkfromtheSouth MiamiBranch.SomerecordsindicatethatshewasthefirstfemalepostalcarrierinDadeCounty,andthe secondinthecountry.Hergroundbreakingcareeropenedthedoorforwomeninthecommunity,particularly theSouth Miami areato pursue careers aspostalcarriers. Ms.Scrivensbegan working fortheUnitedStatesPostOfficein1970.Shewasvery popular amongher colleagues during her twenty-two (22)years of service at the South Miami Post Office.The United States Congrees,through the efforts of Representative CarrieMeek,recentlynamedtheSouthMiamiPostOfficein honor of Ms.Scrivens.The co-naming of the street infront of the post office was requested by Congresswoman Meek and seems avery fitting tribute. Theproposed scheme would havethename of thepostalcarrierplacedabovethestreetoravenue number withinthe street sign.Miami-Dade County onthe designated intersection within the boundaries of the thoroughfare will install thisnewsign.The attached resolution specifies the street and boundaries tobe named "Marjory Williams Scrivens Place". RECOMMENDATION TheCity of SouthMiami Commission andAdministrationstronglybelievesthatthispostalcarriershouldbe honoredandremembered.Therefore,approval of theresolutioncallingfortheproposedstreetnamescheme is recommended. Funding for this disbursement will come from Account No.1730-541-4640 "Maintenance and Repairs of StreetsandParkway. Thisaccountcurrentlyhasabalance of approximately$20,365.00remainingforthefiscalyear. Attachments
