Allsyntheticor non-biodegradable materialsuchasnylon rope, syntheticwrap, treated burlap, etc.mustberemoved from therootballbefore planting. All biodegradable material shouldbe removed fromtheupper1/3 of therootball.Precautions shouldbetakento eliminateanymaterialfromextendingabovethesoilsurfacewhereitcanactasawickand drythe surrounding soil. If treesareplantedwithwire baskets around therootball, itis recommended thatthetop twotiers of wire becutandremovedaftertherootballissetinthe planting hole. Theplantingholeshouldbeatleast3-5timesthediameter oftherootball(where possible) andthe same depth as the rootball. Position thetreeorpalminthe center of the planting holewiththetop of therootballeven with the surrounding soilsurface. Backfill withsoilfromthe planting site if itisnotcontaminated. All large rocksshouldbe removed. When theholeis half full, slowly watertosaturatethesoilandremoveair pockets, thencontinuetofilltheholewithsoil.Itisnotrecommendedthat large amounts of organicmatterbe incorporated intothebackfill.Rake thesoilevenlyaroundtheentire plantingarea. Waterthoroughlytoremove air pockets, securethesoil around the roots, and provide nourishment. Mulchan area atleastthreetimesthediameter of therootballtoadepth of 2-4"with woodchips, barkmulch, shredded mulch, leavesorpine needles.Keepthemulch several inchesawayfromthetreeorpalmtrunk. Replenish mulch as it decomposes maintaining a2-4"layer overthelife of the project. Use flexible materials such as strapping or commercially available ties thatgive as the tree diameter increases and as the tree moves.Biodegradable material is recommended.Donot use wire even if wire is inside rubber hose. Stakes andties should remain onthe trees no longer than one year to avoid girdling. At thetime of plantingonly dead, damaged, rubbingorcross branches or fronds should be removed. Remove suckersproutsfromthebase of thetreeafter planting. Corrective/structuralpruningcanbeginapproximatelyoneyearafterplanting.Donot remove more than1/3 of thelivecrownduringone growing season. Establisha regular watering schedule and followit.Slowdeepwateringis recommended. Additionalwatermaybeneededduringhotordryperiods. As treeorpalmgrowth progresses, besuretowateroutward(awayfromthetrunk)tothe surroundingsoil area, thiswillpromotetheoutwardgrowthandspread of roots. Variousspecies of treesorpalms and/or soiltypesmay require varied degrees of watering. Soilmoistureandtreehealthshouldbemonitoredand irrigation adjusted accordingly. Non-irrigatedsitesneedtobemonitoredmoreclosely. Beginafertilization program withinthefirstyear of planting.Broadcast fertilizing or fertilizer plugs/stakes are recommended. Fertilizelightlyafterthefirstyearusingabalancedfertilizer (rates shouldbebased onthesize of thetreeorpalmandanyspecialnutrient requirements). If micronutrientdeficienciesaresuspected, haveasoiltestcompletedand supplement thefertilization program accordingly.
