For the show,VW enthusiast participate and display their classic,restored,modified,ornewcarsandbuses.Wehavehad over 125 owners participate in 1998,148 in 1999,andover 150 in 2000.It is a one day event which is open to the public at no charge.In addition tothe car display there is entertainment for the entire family (live music,food,stilt walkers,clowns, toys,face painting etc.).The visitors come from Dade,Broward, Palm Beach,andMonroecountiestoattendandvisittheshow. Forthelast show there weresome7,000visitors. Bill,an obvious hard-core VW fan,is nothing ifnot persuasive,and Enrique and Bill spent the next several weeks drumming up interest from friends,strangers wordof mouth,and windshields flyers.On July 18, 13VWs and their guests showed up for the new (unnamed)club'sfirstcaravanand breakfast,toMiamiBeach. Enrique Neufeld's onecaveattoBill Steckley for organizing and denning the club was thatwe participate in some typeof meaningful community-based volunteering onan ongoing basis.In the spring of 1995 the club began volunteering at Habitat for Humanity ofGreater Miami,building hous esforlow income familiesinGoulds.We continue to schedule these workdays every 2-3 months,where weareas handy witha hammer as with a metric wrench. Oneofour first hurdles was naming the club,butit proved tobe an easy task.Angie Claussen,wife ofcharter member Rick ('69 specialty bug),came up with a name sug gestion that was undeniably ours.Anyone who lives in South Florida (or any other tropicalarea)hasencountereda Palmetto Bug (orseveral million).What are they?A cockroach,of course,butno small,easily vanquished creature isthe Palmetto Bug. They are known to grow uptothree inch esin length,are able to fly,don't limit them selves to nighttime activities,get no respect from most people ("gross"and "ugly"are not uncommon descriptions),andcansurvive being stepped on.It sounded perfect to us, andthenamewasadopted immediately with overwhelming approval. The Palmetto Bugs hasnoduesandno official membershiprosteror rules.
