WHEREAS,Fuchs Park,withits majestic and tranquil surroundings isone of the City's most treasured assets;and WHEREAS,Anisa J.Mathews,an FIU art student loved to visit and conduct peer counseling sessionsatthisspecialplace,whichshe affectionately termed herprivate "sanctuary";and WHEREAS,Anisa J.Mathews wasinall honesty an exemplary individual who sharedher dynamic loveand personality witheveryoneshecamein contact with;and WHEREAS,in honor of AnisaJ.Mathews'memory,itisthe Mayor andCity Commission's desireto accept thedonation of atreefrom "Friends of Anisa"forplanting at Fuchs Park. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA; Section 1.In honor of AnisaJ.Mathews'memorytheCity Manager ishereby authorizedtoacceptthedonationofatreeanddedicationplaquefrom"FriendsofAnisa" for planting at Fuchs Park. BACKGROUND The attached resolution sponsored by Mayor Robaina authorizes the City Manager to accept the donation of a tree from "Friends of Anisa"for planting at Fuchs Park in memory of the late Anisa J.Mathews. Anisa J.Mathews an art student at FlU often held Peer Counseling sessions at Fuchs Park,which she had affectionately termed her private "sancutary." rfl(t^j MATHEWS ANISAJ.,28 years old, passed awayonJuly1, 2000.Bornin Charlotte, NCin 1971,she lived inMi amifor the past 6 years. She was an Art student at FlUandwasto graduate in December 2000.Anisa worked atthe Rampage store at the Falls.She is survived by her mother and father,Alison and Denny Maloney of Char lotte.NC:her brother Ben Mathews of Chicago;her grandmother Marjorie Joyner of Charlotte,NC. and her boyfriend Eduardo Recinos and familyofMi ami.Although her life was cut short,she will live on forever in our hearts and memories and will always continue to influence the lives ofall who were so honored to share in her dy namic love and personali ty.A Memorial Service to share and honor the joy of her life will be held at Aoreu Gonzalez located at 6851SW40 Street (Bird Rd.)in Miamion Friday. Myrsine isanendemic native found onlyin southern Florida within the United States.It can befound naturally growing within"bayhead"tree islands inthe everglades.Accordingly,thistree will beplantednexttothe Sweet Bay Magnolia,as it would be found in the natural environment. The Magnoliaand Myrsine areverysimilarin appearance,but the leaves of the Myrsinearedark greenin color whiletheMagnolia's leaves are silver-green.This planting arrangement should therefore be very aesthetic,anda fitting choice for a dedication to honor this woman.
