3 A Resolution of the City of South Miami opposing the proposed development
4 of pine rockland acreage near Zoo Miami located in unincorporated Miami-
S Dade County.

7 WHEREAS, forest land generally located at Southwest 152 Street and Southwest 127
8 Avenue, near Zoo Miami, in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, is being considered for
9 development as a mixed use project; and
10
11 WHEREAS, the Property consists of one of the last intact tracts of endangered pine
12 rockland ("Rockland") within Miami-Dade County; and
13
14 WHEREAS, pine rockland is a globally imperiled habitat containing an array of plants,
15 animals, and insects which are rare and exclusive to that habitat; and
16
17 WHEREAS, some of the endangered species for which Rockland provides a habitat
18 include the bald eagle, indigo snake, the Florida bonneted bat, and two rare butterflies; and
19
20 WHEREAS, as part of the development process, the Miami-Dade Board of County
21 Commissioners will consider declaring the area blighted; and
22
23 WHEREAS, the City of South Miami (the "City") is concerned about the loss of this
24 valuable Rockland and desires to express its opposition to the development of the Property.

26 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
27 COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:

29 Section 1. That the City of South Miami hereby opposes the designation of the pine
30 rockland property near Zoo Miami as blighted and further opposes the development of this
31 natural area -one of the last intact tracts of endangered pine rockland within Miami-Dade
32 County.

34 Section 2. City Clerk. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit this Resolution to
35 the Mayor and County Commissioners of Miami-Dade County, Florida and all elected municipal
36 officials in Miami-Dade County.

38 Section 3. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for
39 any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall
40 not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.

42 Section 4. Effective Date. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon
43 adoption by vote of the City Commission.
