The meeting was called to order by Vice Prese Barrow? with Mayor Thomp-
son and Councilmen Bryant, Atwood, Barrow? Pressley and Shafer respond-
ing to roll call:
Minutes,,of the regular meeting of r:iarch 2 were approved as read.
Harry Letaw appeared before the Council to state that he was ;plannzi
to open a retail drug and sundry store, with fountain and luncheonette
at Bird and Red Roads and would like permission to install a magazine
stand on the west end of the Bird Road side of the building, to extend
not more than approximately 36" out from the building. Following dis-
cussion, Councilman Iviaples, seconded by Councilman Shafer, moved that there-
quested permit be granted. Motion, carried.
Clayton Acker next appeared to request clarification on the width of
the alley and of the green strip in the proposed subdivision of acreage
west of N. Fourth Ave. between Ni. 4th St. and N. 8th St., stating that
in the recommendation of` the 'Zoning Board on January 209 19489 the
width of the alley was 15' and of the green strip 1717 altho the work
diagram used at the hearing had a pencil notation to widen the alley
to c and narrow
' green Y strip o 7' Following discussion,
4 Councilman Shafer tseconded bC Councilman Bryant, moved that the records'I
be corrected to show a 25 ft. alley and a 7 ft. green strip7 and further
provide for a 20 ft. alley in the middle of the business block extending
along No Fourth Avenue. Lotion carried.
A. Leach called attention to the jog in the intersection of N. 3rd Ave.
and: N. 2nd St. and asked for "stop" signs to guard the children at
play in that vicinity and was assured that his request :would receive
attention. His request for a streetlight at that intersection uas re-
ferred to Chairman Atwood for investigation.
`County Commissioner Freston Bird paid a brief visit and in connection
with fire protections stated that he mould like to see a law passed
requiring fire wells equipped with universal fixtures in all new sub-
divisions.
A letter from E. L. Cotton7 requesting a change in zoning of certain
lots in W. A. LARY.T t3 SURD. was read. Councilman Pressl.e;yq seconded by '
Councilman Shafer7 moved that it be referred to the Advisory Zoning
Board with the suggestion that commercial zonii-�r, be extended along �±
S. lst St. to Recd Road.7 upon application. 1Aotion carried.
A letter from Shellie Gi Moorer and otherst requesting a commercial
zoning of certain lots in MC=- r-,VER TrOaGICEI along Bird toad, upon
motion of Councilman Pressley, seconded by Councilman Shafer ;was also
referred to the Advisory ZolY alg Board. Motion carried.
A letter from I'lussall A. Rasco to Mayor Thompson, tvas read, a.: king
that If the City is still intGro,tuil in a crater diotri` cation syotem
proposed by his clients a lottor ha given stating that a 50 -year
franchise would be granted upon proper, showing of financial backing and
zability to install the system. Following discussion, Councilman Shafer,
`"secended by Councilman bilaples, that the matter be referred to Atty. 4ard
and 'have him make his recommendation back to the Cowzcil. Motion carried.

Reports of standing committees were as follows;
Finance: 'Chairman Bryant stated that it would be best to pay for the new
sanitary truck out of General Fund in full and save the finance charges.'
lie also brought up the matter of Iverson Head's request fora change of
zoning of his lots in RIVIERA PIIJLS9 stated -that he now was asking for
R -2 (duplex) zoning., Following discussion, Couuncilman Diaplesj seconded
by Councilman Atwood, moved that the matter be referred to the Advisory
Zoning Board with recommendation of approval, provided a written request
is submitted. Motion carried.
In c.orulection with the nee, Miami water main being projected across parts
of South Miami, ;Councilman. Bryant suggested that this might be the time
for someone to talk with the Niami Water Board about hooking in on the
main as it comes thru and Councilman Shafer''raised the question of the ,
City's right to regulate in some way the surface appearance of property
where the main goes thru. It was suggested to refer both of these
points to Atty. Ward.
Sanitation; It was ,agreed that for the present only property damage
and public liability insurance be taken out on the new sanitary truck
delivered that day.
Fire: Chairman Maples recommended the purchase of approximately 300
ft. of fire hose at 1.27 per ft. from the Eureka Fire Hose Divisiont in
keeping with underwriter's requirements for the replenishment of hose;
and also recommended`at*least 12 additional fire wells.
He also said that he would like to commend the Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment as well as the City's own Fire Chief and Assistant Chief in lay -
ing hose in record time and doing what they could to protect property
adjoining the old house which burned down in the colared section on

It was puggested that Chairman Maples talk with Hughes Miller and other
firms to get estimates on wells and Councilman Ma les seconded by
Councilman Pressley, moved that the City buy the ''urea Fire hose.
Motion carried.
Police: Chairman Pressley reported that they would need a girl in the
office starting :about April 1 at ,35.00 per week for about 6 weeks to
help with the car inspections.
Buildings: Chairman Shaferg reported that Atty. Ward advised that the
Planning Board would have to be established by Ordinance and it was
his suggestion that Atty. ',lard be requested to draw it up providing for
a 7- Member Board. Ile reported that Messrs. C. D. Tharp, ho. Bremer anc
H. V. Vsnderboeth had agreed to serve together with the three members of
'�-� the Adviaory Zoning Board and the Chairman of Buildings.

Ido. 170 caption of which follows be placed on first reading in its
entirety. Motion carried.

Thereupon Councilman Shafer, seconded by Councilman Pressley, moved
that Ordinance No. 170 be placed on second reading by caption only.
Motion carried.
Councilman Bryanty seconded by Councilman Atwood2 then moved that
Ordinance No 170 be placed on third and final reading in its entirety.

Streets & Parks: Chairman Atwood said he wanted a truck for his men, ex-
plaining that the Dodge pick -up is taken by the police department at
times. In connection with this matter, Councilman I;Iaples2 seconded by
Councilman Bryantl moved that when Councilman Atwood is out of town and
it is necessary for his men to get orders, they are to be given by the
President of the Council. Motion carried.:
Chairman Atwood also reported that County Commissioner Bird had told
him that if the City can get the right -of -way from the Railroad and
the adjoining property owners, he would have the crossing at S. 4th
Avenue straightened out, with the understanding, that at time of com-
pletion the old one will be abandoned. It was agreed to try to work
this out.
Councilman Maples,, seconded by Councilman Bryant, moved that W. D.
Johnson be notified by letter to be signed by the mayor that the 'boxes
and othef material scattered about his place will have to be moved or
piled up and burned. Motion carried.
