CITY COUNCIL HELD TUESDAY EVENING
JANUARY 21, A.D. 1947 AT THE CITY HALL
AT 8':00 P.M..
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Barrow with Mayor Vanderboegh
Atty. Ward and Councilmen Gladden, Shafer, Iuaples and Barrow respond-
ing to roll call.;
Minutes of the regular meeting of January 7 were approved as read.
Regular order of business was suspended to take up with Mrs. Haughton
the question of the possibility of re- zoning a tract in4,the extreme
SE corner of the City to permit its development as a co- operative
residential club for older people. She submitted plans and perspect-
ives for her project which provided for 24 residential buildings
each having 4 units totaling approximately 2500 sc,. ft. and ,,a minimum
Of 109.000 sq. ft. or ground space per building. The Council expressed
itself as favoring such a project but could take no action at this
time as Atty. Ward point "ed out that a request for a change in zoning
could be considered only if made by the owner of the property or
purchaser under contract, and 'Mrs. Haughton agreed.to take the neces-
sary steps.
With increased seasonal activity on. the FEC Ry it was decided to write
the Company a letter, to be signed -by the Mayors calling attention to the City's request a year ago for proper warning devices at the Sunset
Drive and Red Road crossings9 on which no action has as yet been taken
by the Railroad, and that the Excessive speed which the irregularly
scheduled trains were maintaining thru the City's limits was in viola --
tion of the City's ordinance and must be reduced.
In the matter of local legislation in the forthcoming session of the
State Legislature, ratty. Ward recommended that no changes be requested;
and also stated that future problems would not be solved by proposed
consolidation but by are-grouping.
Following a discussions Councilman Maples, 'seconded by Councilman
Gladden, moved that 'the City take up the ,South Miami Chamber of
Commerce proposal that the City take over half of the bookle4;�-on
South Miami recently published by the South Miami T mesa paying
$150.00 therefor, the Chamber to pay the other $150.00. Motion
carried. It was decided to distribute these booklets to the out-of-
county and out -of -state property owners and .�ti.y,',, :`Jard recommended that
copies also be sent all county officials, the Dade legislative delega-
tion and the congressional representatives.

Applications of andreQ Nesbitt for an addition and E. L. Meryman for
a residence, both with FHA authorization already obtained7'were sub-
mitted for consideration and after being checkedg Councilman Shafer,
seconded by Councilman Gladdens moved that they be approved with the
alterations indicated. Motion carried;.
The Council examined each of the petitions nominating the following
candidates for Mayor: Winford W. Brown, Dr. Henry L. Hughes,, E. L.
Thompson; and the following candidates for Council: W. H. Atwood,
H. Hollis Barrow, J. M. (Pat) Bryant, W. T.. Clark,, Joseph Gladden,
G. M. Hughes, J. F. Maples, T11. A. Pressley, Jr..p Edgar E. Shafer and
J. W. Strong, and after due investigation Councilman Gladden2 seconded
by Councilman Maplest moved that the above names be placed on the
official ballot as candidates for the said respective offices. Motion
carried.
It was agreed that if the South Miami TIMES wished to publish the list
of registered voters, said list be made available to the editor.
In line with the Council's recommendation of December 10, 1946 and
the approval of the Advisory Zoning Board, Councilman Shafer, seconded
by Councilman Maples, moved that the minimums requirements for a'one-
family residence in each direction from the intersection of Sunset
and Ludlum and to a property depth of 330 feet, be lowered to 1200
sq ft. in line with adjoining property along those roads. Motion
carried.
