1946-11-26 MINUTES OF CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MTGMINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY
COUNCIL OF SOUTH MIAMI 'HELD TUESDAY EVENING
- NOVEMBER 269 A. D. 1946 AT THE CITY HALL AT
8:00 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Barrow with Mayor Vander
boeghp Councilmen Gladdens Sapos, Faust and Barrow responding to
roll call.
Pres. Barrow read the notice for the meeting which had been called
for the purpose of conducting a hearing on the application of R. J.
Johnson for an application for certificate of convenience and neces-
sity for a colored bus service into Miami.
Councilman Shafer joined the meeting during the discussion.
M J. Johnson was present on his own behalf and the South Miami
Coach Line was represented by Atty H. H. Eyless and Atty. Morton B.
Adams and Supt. of Transportation: C. A. Brinson.
Following Mayor Vanderboegh's question as to whether there was
abything to discuss,, in the absence of City Atty. Ward, Councilman
Gladdens seconded by Councilman Faustq moved to not grant a franchise
or certificate of necessity to M. J. Johnson on the ground that present
transportation is adequate. Motion carried.
Coach Line attorneys Eyles and Adams asked that the records be
brought up to date on w#at equipment is on hand, schedulesq etc. and
C. A. Brinson presented the following facts. The Company is now
operating 12 bussesp has acquired two more for emergency usep and
4 new ones ere•orn order at the factory. At present they are making;
91 round trips daily in and out of Miami$ with 5 trips hourly and
additional busses during the rush!hoursq covering two routest one
of which completely skips the Coconut Grove colored section. He
further stated that every effort was being made to take care of peak
loads with extra busses but that the time of these peak loads fre-
quently varies. Atty. Eyles also brought out the fact that altho
operating expenses had increased between 40 and 50% there had been
intention to do soy that the bus company has grown withthe present
no re uest for an increase in their fares nor was it their
the com-
munitys putting back into additional equipment all the money made
in the years it has been in operation under the present management
whose aim is to give good and adequate service to South Miami.
M. J. Johnson submitted his proposal in 'writing also as a matter of
record.
There being no further discussions; the meeting was adjourned in regular
order at approximately 8:15 P.M. ,r
