MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF SOUTH A IAMI
HELD TUESDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 27
A.D. 1945 AT THE CITY HALL AT 8 P.M.
The meeting was called to order, by Vice - President Faust2 in the absence
of Fres. Brown who joined the meeting a little later. Mayor Vander-
boegh and Councilmen Gladden, Barrow, Maples, Bennett and Faust re-
sponded to roll call;, and Councilman Pope arrived shortly thereafter.
Vice -Pres. Faust read the notice for the meeting which had been called
for the purpose of discussing with Chamber of Commerce officials city
planning matters and for any emergency business that may come before
the meeting.,- -
The following Chamber of Commerce members were also pres,�ntd Pres.
L. K Denning, Mr. & Mrs. T. H Oden, Messrs. A.L. Bridges,_,. L.
Cotton, A. W. Spaulding,, Omar Stang, L. D. Llewellyn, and Mrs. Myrtle
Allard, editor of the new South Miami weekly paper.
At this point the meeting was turned over to Mayor Vanderboegh who
introduced Mr.'Geo, K. Zain as the speaker of the evening, on city
planning.
His suggestions included signs to indicate the entrance to and exit from
South Miami along the highway, changing the name, beautification of
vacant lots along the highway with shrubbery about 15 ft. back from
the road line, minimum frontage of 100 ft'. for residential lots, the
development of one -and two -acre homesites and 5 -and 10 -acre estatesq
a ban on poultry farms within the City limits, re- building and beautifi-
cation of the colored sec'tiong formation of an association for the
development of the main street in the community, regulation of business
buildings as to fronts, height, color scheme, etc. .p setting aside of a
zone for light manufacturing, and advocated support for a toll highway
from Jacksonville to Key "Jest in the belief that it would promote the
development of the southern part of the state.
In the course of discussion which followed, on the question of the
change in names it was agreed that the principal objection to the
present name is the 'word "South`" and that the retention of the word
"Miami" with another more appropriate word would be desirable -, such
as ,Viami Gardens ",
The following bills were submitted for approval and payment, to wind
up the business of the outgoing Council.
