SEPTELBIER ,57 A. D. 1944 AT THE CITY HALL AT
8:00 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Brown with L7ayor Vander-
bo.egh and Councilmen Bostwick2 Barrow, Faust, hinn, Bennett and
Brown responding to roll call.
The minutes of the regular meeting of August 15 and of the ;special
meeting of August 29 were respectively read and approved.
It letter from the Disaster Relief Committee of the American Red
Cross, asking whether the City Hall and the Community Building
would be available as shelter in case of hurricai7e2 was read and
the Clerk instructed to acknowledge receipt of said letter and
advise the committee that these buildings will be open for that
purpose.
The resignation -of Councilman Bostwick.was next read and Councilman
Faustt seconded by Councilman Bennetty moved that it be spread upon
the minutes and accepted with regrets and a vote of thanks for his
services. - Motion carried. The resignation follows.

Gentlemen:
Due to the fact that lam moving out of the City of South Miami
within the next few dayst I- hereby tender ray resignation as City
Councilman to take effect midnight September 5th, 1944.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the
Councils and all city employees for the wonderful co- operation they
have given me for the past five years. Andq even though I will not
be living in the city properg I would consider it a privilege and
pleasure to at any time assist in any movement for the betterment
of the city.

At this point Atty. 1,1ard joined the meeting.
Deports of standing committees were as follows:
Financo: absent.
Sanitation: O.Y..1, except that the truck needs a thoro cleaning.
It was suggested that this be done with the fire truck and hose
at a caell away from any dwelling.
Fire Councilman. Barrow reported that the City had finally received
the 200 ft. of hose originally ordered 2 years ago, but on which prior
-ity had been held up;. He stated that it had been tested out that
day with 360 pounds pressure and was C.K. The need now is for some
booster hose', and it was agreed to place an order,
Police. Councilman Bennett; reported 'c'onsiderable difficulty in
getting another police officer to replace H. C. Brown who had given
verbal notice. Melton and Rogers of the Fire Dept. have agreed to
help out until another police officer can be gotten.
nt this point Councilman Faust asked to be excused.

Mayor Va:nderboegh again brought up the question of setting a price on
the eas l'half -acre in Sec. 25 which the City has agreed to sell to
P.. B. Slocomb, stating that Mr. Slocomb finds it difficult to attend
a meeting in 'the evening, as originally suggested. Following a dis
cussion, Councilman =Bostwick2 seconded by Councilman Barrow, moved
that the City accept $175 -CO for that half acre., Motion carried.

brought up briefly the matter of the Dade. County

Planning Board which is now considering �,ost -war ,plans, and suggested
that the City consider such things as °streets, side- walksq water
and electriclights7 ai - :d possibly a colored housing project and
begin work on such planning.

In discussing the matter of stopping the sale of all alcoholic bever-
ages for a 24 hour period immediately following the declaration of
an armistice with Germany, Atty. Ward stated that Miami had amended
its ordinance to that effect but there was a question as to its-
legality, that the military authorities were averse to any celebra-
tion at that time, and it was his suggestion that in solace of an
ordinance or resolution, the City -would try to _.get out a letter to be
signed by each of the permit - or license - holders that they will

With the starting of school and resuxaption of the school bus' the
question of insurance was brought up but as no other firm 'than
Horsleys had submitted a policy, it was agreed that this firm be
given the business.
