D 1941 AT TEMi CITY BALL AT 8:00 P. M The meeting was called to order by Pres. Vanderboegh, with Mayor Glass Councilmen Bostwick, Brown, Faust, Bennett,, Vanderboegh and Gladdeng and Atty. +lard, present. Pres. Vanderboegh read the notice for the meeting which had been called< for the purpose of allotting to the South Miami Chamber of Commerce certain Publicity Funds1 and for any othe before the Council. r emergency business that might come Messrs. Chas. T Fuchs, Chas. E Dutcher and L R. Geiger were present as the Chamber's representatives. Mayor Glass reported that he had attended a meeting of the County Commis.. sion that day and had obtained a tentative promise that the County would give $500.00 to the Chamber if the City will allocate $375,00 to that organization2 final action to await the City ►s decision. Councilman Browne seconded by Councilman Bostwick moved that the City turn over to the Sduth Miami Chamber of Commerce$ a non.- profit corporation, $375.00 foy publicity purposes to be matched or bettered by the County Commission. Motion carried, by polio as follows: Gladden yes B"t;Atwick yes Brown yes Faust ';yes Bennett yes Vanderboegh yes It was understood that these funds were to be applied to the publishing of A South Miami District booklet: and a South Miami float in the forthcoming 'Orange Bowl parade. As emergency business, Mayor Glass took the floor to report on the gambling situation which had culminated in raids that day and a hearing in the Municipal Courts; just preceding the Council meeting. He stated that !follow- ing persistent reports that open gambling was going on in South Miamit and complaints by citizens, he had held a conference with Pres Vanderboegh and Police Commissioner Bennett, that it was decided that an# independent agency be employed to investigate the gambling situation in South Miami and on recommendation of officials of the Florida National Bank the Smith Agency was employed. The operator' Floyd Miner had been made a special police officer of the City for this work, with instructions to check the entire town and make a report of conditions as he actually found thaw. His reports sealed, was now on the Council table. Several gambling cases had been tried in Courtq all had pled guilty. For the Agency ►s services there will be a charge of $10.00 per day and expenses, and $20.00 had been advanced by Pres. Vanderboeghp toward this expenditures As insurance against a repetition of this conditionp Mayor Glass su�ested periodic check -ups be made, and asked that the report be read at this time. Following the reading of the reports the operator, Floyd Miners stated that tfied only thing he could add was that R. L. Dyson was picked up at the .., Dixie Pig late that Afternoon, a fact not contained in the report. Chairman. Bennett stated that he would like the consent of the Council at this time to hire an outside man to bet evidence, should it again become )necessary at same future date. Councilman Brown, seconded by Councilman Faust moved that if the Mayor or Police Commissioner see; fit in the future to act under the same conditions, that they have the right to do so Lotion carried Councilman Brown, seconded..by Councilman Fdastl moved that the Council confirm the action taken and commend the committee on the method of handling the situation. 211otion. carried. Councilmen Bennett) seconded by Councilman Bostwickv moved that E. Ericson be paid $2.00 per day for time beingp payable with regular pay .roll. Motion carried) by poll, as follows: Gladden yes Bostwick yes Brown yes Faust yes Bennett yes Vanderboegh yes With the report of the receipt of a check for $79.07 from the County Road -& Bridge Fund and a $25.00 donation tothe City, together with a letter expressing appreciation for the City's services,, from Mr. J B. langdon the meeting was brought to a close and adjourned in regular order.
