CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTI3 LIIAMI
HELD TUESDAY EVENING AUGUST 51 A. D. 1941'
AT THE CITY MALL AT 6:00 P. M.
The meeting was called to order by Vice -Pies. Faust, with Iwlayor Glass, and
Councilmen Gladden, Brown, Bostwickt Bennett aid Faust responding to roll
calla
bliinutes of the regular meeting of July 15, and of the special meeting, of
July 16, were respectively read and approved.
At this point Pres. V.anderboegh arrived and took over the chair.
Minutes of the three meetings of the Equalization Board of July 14$ 15 and
16 respectively, were read and approved.
A letter from Yrs. Annis was read, advising the Council that 36 of the
original 48 enrollees in the ladies'' Red 'Cross First, Aid Class had passed
and viould receive certificates
Reports of standing committees were as follows:
Finance: O.K.
Sanitation: Chairman Faust took up With the Council the matter of tires
for the truck and it was agreed it would be a good idea to get them now.
Firez Chairman Brown reported on a barn fire on Ludlum Rd. in which the

d on his vacation, Councilman Browne seconded by
Councilman Gladden, moved that E. Ericson be paid for 14 days at the rate
of $3.00 per day, as substitute for Melton, who in turn was working on the
police force during the Chief's absence. Motion .carried by poll, as follays;

Buildin , Chairman Bostwick pointed to the air- conditionii-ig installed in
the City Ball. It was also agreed to get inspection stickers for the plumbing;
inspector's use.
Councilman Bostwick, seconded by Councilman Brown, moved that the City send
flowers to Mrs. Wiegand, Sr•q who is ill in the hospital. Yot on carried.
There was nothing to report on the water situation.
Councilman Brown, seconded by Councilman Gladdens moved that Grdinance #131
caption of which followso be placed on third and final reading in its
entirety. ItiSotion carried.

Councilman Gladden, seconded by Councilman Bennett, then moved that C- rdinance

A letter from the Advisory Zoning Board, recommending the change in !zoning;
from trailer camps and parks to residential, following a hearing held in
accordance with the provisions of Ord. #98, was read. Councilman Bostwick,
seconded by Councilman Faust, moved that the recommendations of the Zoning
Board be accepted and the City attorney instructed to draw up the necessary
amending ordinance. Iaiotion carried._ Acting on the Board's further recom
mendation that the City look into the possibilities of employing a City
planner, Councilman Faust, seconded by Councilman Bostwick, moved that the
City Clerk write Geo. P. Sirrtons, at Jacksonville, and ask what his services
_ could be had for. Motion carried
Mayor Glass called to the Council's attention the financial difficulties of
the H mane Society of Greater Ivliami2 as well as the splendid work done 'by
this organization, and Councilman Gladden, seconded by Councilman_ Bostwick,
moved that the City give $10.00 per month until further notice, payable the
5th of each month without further action by the Council. Motion carried by
poll as follows:

Councilman Bennett, seconded by Councilman Gladden, moved that the City renew
its membership in the South Miami District Chamber of Commerce. Itiotion
carried,
With the audit completed and reports submitted,, Councilman Gladden seconded
by Councilman Vaust,q moved that it be accepted. Lotion carried.
In line with the auditor's recommendation that a re- appraisal of fixed assets
be undertaken, Councilman Faust, seconded by Councilman Gladden, moved that
the Presi -ent appoint a committee to undertake this viof•k. Irotion carried.
Pros. Vanderboegh appointed Cowicilman Gladden,, Bostwick and Faust to this
cormriittee, with the reconrinendation that each department head file a return
with theme as an ai&�arriving- at fair values.
Yayor Glass diam sed briefly the "baby" bonds and defense stAmps, and
urged every one to buy as many as possible.

seconded by Councilman Bostwick, moved, that Mr. Thompson work out a programs
)including a base ball game betw_en the Council of South Mliami and that of
North Miami or any other municipality that will play, everyone to bring his
or her own iunch, but free lemonade to be furnished, and prizes. Motion
carried.
Councilman Gladden brought up the question of the addition to the Community
Building provided for in the new budget,, but in the absence of Councilman
Core it was decided to hold the matter over.

Mayor Glass discussed the need for sewerage systems and disposal plants,
and Councilman Bost:vickt seconded by Councilman Gladden, moved that Mayor
Glass be authorized to vrrite a letter to the 'County Colrunissionersq stating
that if and when a comprehensive system is proposed, South Miami will be
behind the move.. I,,otion, carried.
