The meeting was called to order by Pres. Vanderboe'gh'with Mayor Glassy
Councilmen Gladden, Bryant, Bostwickg Core, Bennett, and Vanderboegh
and Attorney SVJard responding, to roll call.
Minutes, of the special meeting of June 26 were approved as read.
Regular order of business was suspended to takeT up the requests of
visestors present. Mrs. John Fournier of 301 $• State Highway, which is
within 300 ft. of the playground as the crow flies., asked whether the
Ordinance restricting the location of package liquor stores on this
basis could be changed to read "as the j.,edestrian walks ". Following
a discussion on the subjectq Councilman Gladdens seconded by Council-
man Bryant, moved that Ordinance ;x113 be amended by amending section
5b to read as follows; "said distance of 300 ft. to be computed and
measured from the nearest point of front doors or entrances from each
point as the pedestrian walks along sidewalk or dedicated right -of --
way." Motion carried, with negative vote cast by Councilman Bennett.
Thereupon Councilman Bostwick1, seconded by Councilman Core, moved that
Ordinance #124, caption of which follows,, be placed on first reading in-
its'entirety.« ^,lotion carried. _

Councilman Coreq seconded by Councilman Gladden, then moved that Ordi-
nance r "x124 be placed on second reading by caption only. I'do t ion carried.
Next to be given the floor were the Stang brotherst wanting approval
of the proposed subdivision to be known as Lffi'I ENCE HCIkM#SITES, sub-
mitting a rough draft thereof, which provided the required right -of -way
dedications and lots having a.minimum of 101,000 sq. ft. to meet certain
FHA requirements. Councilman Bennett, seconded by Councilman Core
moved that the Council tentatively approve the submitted draft, to be
confirmed by formal resolution when official blue prints have been
preparedt certificate of engineer obtained and usual dedication aj.proved
by "the City Attorney. Motion carried.
Is. Fe Pedersen appeared before the Council to request 'that a traffic
light or blinker be installed at the corner of Red Road and State Hwy.
in an effort to reduce traffic hazards and make the southbound traffic,
esaecia.ily1, conscious of the need for slowing up. It was decided that

a blinker there, as South I;iami owns and maintains the light at iced.&
Sunset, bot:t corners being on the Boundary line between the communities.
:r. 0. R Bell personally appeared before the Council with a request

to rent the Community Building, not for the Anti -war League, as
previously requested, but for the purpose of organizing ahoome defense
to be "thoroughly patriotic". It was deeded that ,the
'formation of various leagues for defense might prove conflicting, and
even slow up real defense work,, and; that the American Legion,, being`
organized for that very purpose, was fully capable of handling any
situation that might; come up. Attorney Nard also questioned the City's'
right to grant the use of`City property as a place `to which people
could come in answer to postal cards sent out (as proposed by T1Ir. Bell)
for the purpose of organizing.;_ In view of these opinions, Ivir. Bell's
request for the use of the Community Building was denied.
Regular order of business was resumed with the consideration of letters
and ;communications2 which were. as follows:
Action on a letter from the Palm Typewriter Co., offering a maintenance
contract for the adding machine, in the Clerk *.s office, was held ups pend-
ing further investigation as to what the service covered.
'A letter addressed to President Vanderboeght regarding the City's plate
glass insurance, Workmen's compensation and other policies z from the [7m.
T. Martin Insurance Agency, was read. Fo.lowing a discusslon, -it was
decided that no change be made in the present insurance set -ups which
has proven satisfactory in all respects, including the method of finan-
cing.
11 letter from County Commissioner Charles Crandon regarding the extension
of Bird Road Parkway west from Iced Road, resulted in a motion by Council
man Gladden, seconded by Councilman Bostwick, that 11MERPAS construction
of the Parkway along Bird Road ijest from Red Road is a vital necessity
in view of the traffic conditions, especially during the racing season '
it is hereby moved that the Mayor of South I ;Uami be instructed to
petition the Board of County Engineers to give,this matter their prompt
attention. 1,otion carried. -
Th connection with road work Councilman Core reported that Sunset Road
was being rebuilt from Cocoplum Plaza to Red Road and he would try to
Pee Commissioner Paxson about extending this work through South Miami.
Mayor Glass reported that in response to his request, County engineer
Friedman had agreed to make Sunset road a thru street to the County
hospital, thereby reducing hazards at certain intersections.
A letter from the president of the proposed Crippled Children's hospital,,
inviting the 1,.ayor and other City officials to be present at the
ground breaking ceremonies on July 4th.9 was read.
A letter from County Tax .assessor J. N. Lumnus7 Jr.9 calling attention
to the recent ruling by the Attorney General of the State, on the
interpretation of the Homestead Exemption Law as applied to comimercially
used buildings, was :read.

information on the possibility of asse85iiv, homesteads for street lights,

Reports of standing committees were as follows:
Finance: Councilman Gladden reported conditions good and that the
City was entering its new fiscal year with approximately $4,000.00
on hand.
Sanitation: Councilman Bryant reported E4 H. Rogers on his vacatiohi
and Councilman Gladden, seconded by Councilman ostivick, moved that
that check for two weeks' pay (@ $>2.00 per nay O.E. "Ericson, be included.

Layor Glass asked whether there would be any objection to his using
the old trash truck for a day to haul some dirt, but it was decided .

Police. Councilman Bennett reported that in the absence of Chief
Wiegand, who is on vacation, he was taking personal responsibility'
for the operation of his department. lie also raised the question
of raising the flag each day on the City Hall as well.as down at the
Community Bldg., and Councilman Gladdens seconded by Councilman
Bostwick, moved that a flag and pole be obtained for the City Hall
and the necessary rope for the flag at the Community Bldg. TY'otion
carried. Councilman Bostwick, seconded by Councilman Gladden, moved
that check at $3-90 per day for time put in as substitL-re on police
force be made out to S. F. Mew with the other pay checks on July 15.

Streets & Parks: Councilman Core reported that the patch truck was
at work on the streets. The'proposed straightening of S. 4th Ave. at
the railroad crossing was tabled until _a future date. Councilman Core
