1940-04-02 MINUTES OF CITY COUNCIL MTG�a ii MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TIM CITY OF SOUTH 14IAMI HELD TUESDAY E X— ING, APRIL 2, A. D. 1940 AT THI CITY HALL AT 8:00 P. M. The meeting was - called to order by Pres. Vanderboegh, with Councilmen Gladden, Thompson, Bostft6k, Bryant, Core, Vanderboegh and Atty. Ward responding to roll call. Minutes of the regular meeting of March 19 were approved as read. A letter from the County Engineer, regarding the County fire truckts assistance, was read. Councilman Core reported that it had been brought to the attention of County Commissioner J. L. Paxson and it was decided to hold up any further action for the time being. , A letter from the Florida Municipal Finance Officers Association 'regardng the meeting at Gainesville on April 8 and 99 was read. Councilman Bostwick, seconded by Councilman Core, moved that the City Clerk attend the meeting with the City paying the expenses'. Motion carried by poll, as follows Gladden yes Thompson yes Bostwick yes 'Bryant yes Core yes Vanderboegh yes`.. Reports of standing committees were as follows Finsneet ly1th assistance needed for typing tax roll, etc. in the Clerk's office, Councilman Thompson, seconded by Councilman Core, moved that pay at the rate of $2,00 per day for actual time put in by Gladys Cliett be included in the regular pay roll until further notice. Motion carried by poll, as follows= Gladden ,yes Thompson yes Bostwick yes, Bryant yes Core yes Vanderboegh yes. Polices In the absence of Councilman Bennett,'Councilmrn Core, seconded by Councilman Thompson, moved that the police department get extra help as in the past, when the rush for car inspections comes. Motion carried. 9Lnitations Councilman Bryant reported on trouble with the truck, with the recommendation that the purchase of a new one would be more economical in the long ran than to continue with expensive repairs on the old one. After dis- cussion, including financing, Councilman Thompson, seconded by Councilman Gladden, moved that the City advertise for bids on a chassis and cab. Motion carried. At this point regular business was suspended to permit Miss Margaret 11ills to present :a request to the Council for an adjustment on certain tax certificates, on Tract l BIRD ROAD TERRACE9 however, as this property is involved in a Ano Warranto suit,, and the certificates are not yet two years old, Atty. Ward ad- vised that-it Would be 4une before the City would be in a position to give an answer to this request. There being no other visitors to be heard, regular business was again resumed. y f Fire, Everything In good condition. Streets & Parks Councilmen Core reported that the street work was being completed, and that it would probably be necessary to replace W A. Crum, who has left for treatment at Bay Pines. Buildings': O. ,R. Work on the proposed police ordinance was not yet completed, so no report could be made. The question of ownership of a pump house and contents on the parkway of S. 12th Street in SEA VIE,u PARK has been raised in order that the pump house which is in very dilapidated condition might be demolished before the storm season comes. Atty. Ward suggested that a'letter be written to Walter Clifford, of the original. developers of that subdivision, asking for permission to tear down the building and moving away the pump and tank. In connection with the death of Mayor Sewell of Miami, Pros. Vanderboegh and the Council asked for a`Resolution, which Atty. Ward dictated, as follows= RESOLUTION N0. 195 A RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY ON THE DEATH OF 'MAYOR E. G. SEWELL OF MIAMI, OFFERING SYMPATHY OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL AND PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAM1I TO THE FAMILY ANp RELATIVES. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY 'COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI THAT, WHEREAS, by the untimely 'death of Mayor E. G. Sewell, the City of Miami as well as every municipality and every citizen of Dade County, Florida and the State of Florida, as a`whole, have lost a valued public servant and upright cition zen, and whereas the public life of E. Go Sewell has been an inspiration to every public official of Dade County, ,NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of the City of South Miami in official body assembled to hereby extend to the family and relatives their deepest sympathy at their great loss. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to Mrs. E. G. Sewell, the widow, and a copy be forwarded to the City Manager of the City of Miami. PASSED JAND ADOPTED this 2nd. day of April, A. D. 1940. Councilman Gladden, seconded by Councilman Core, then moved that Resolution #195 be adopted as read. Motion carried. Councilman Gladden, seconded by Councilman Bostwick,' moved that the City send :. a $10.00 wreath of flowers for the Sowell funeral. Notion carried. Pres. Vanderboogh reported that he had written a letter of condolence to Firs. Coleman and flowers for the casket had been ordored. Councilman Bostwick, I seconded by Councilman Thompson, moved that the letter be embodied in the minutes of the meeting. Motion carried, April 2, 1940 Mrs. Otis Coleman South Miami, Fla. Dear Airs Coleman On behalf of the officials and employees of the City of South Miami I wish to extend to you and,your family, in your hour of bereavement, our sincerest sympathy. The new= of Otis Coleman's passing came as a great shock to all of us. While his association with the City as a member of the Police Department was only too brief, he had come to us as a friend rather than a stranger and his passing will be a loss to us also. In connection with the proposed Crippled Children's Hospital, a copy of Mayor Glass' letter to Air. W. L. Philbr ck, Chairman offering the City's 20 acres on the Nest side of Ludlum Road, was read. Councilman Core brought up the question of scarifying the land as a further inducement for its acceptance and was instructed to find out whether the County equipment could be used, if the City paid, for the gas and labor, which would probably be around $100.00.
