Minutes of regular meeting of City Council, at City Hall, South.Miami, Fla. June 16,
1931, at '6 P. M
Present were R. J. Lindley, President of the council, and councilmen Houser, A
Angerman, Burtashaw, Red and Shelley.
Meeting'oailed to order by the President, whereupon the minutes of the ,previous
meetings were read and approved.,
Councilmen Red then made motion secomcled'by Councilman Burtashaw,'that the Florida
Power and Light Co. be paid $ 215910 being balance due in lull to June let, Motion I'
was polled and unanimously carried.
Councilman Red then made motion seconded by councilman Angerman, that Ordinance M

a0. - 5�-be given its third reading by sections, Motion carried. President Lindley
then read ' ordinance the Caption of which is as, folloa►s;
An ordinance amending certain sections, schedules and provisions, of ordinance
No* 2 of the City of,S,outh 3iami,- Florida, relating to license taxes and privileges
Motion by councilman Red that words ( where batteries are charged) be eliminated
from ordinance where it relates to filling stations and that license be reduced to $ 12.00
That lumber merchant license be reduced from $ 37.50 to 4 25.00.
This motion was seconded by councilman Angerman, and carried unanimously.
Mr Red then made motion seconded by councilman Burtashaw that ordinance be adopted
as read and amended. Motion carried.
The Clerk was instructed to issue occupational to Mr John Opsahl, as retail merchant
Reports,
Houser fire commissioner, reported on bids for drilling of wells for
fire protection as follows;
For drilling of 6 in. well L. F. Coe 50 ft. or more furnish
everything at aprice of $ 3.50 per foot•
as H. Perry drill 50 ft* or more furnish everything $ 4:75 per foot.
R. H. Magruder drill 50 fte or more fire cap extra, at r 5.00 per foot.
Councilman Red then made motion- seconded by councilman Shelley, thatblir Rouser
accept thanks of the council for his diligence, inthi.a matter.
Mot ion "was unanimously carried.
Councilman Angerman' building commissioner, reported that he had E. L. Thompson
move posts for stationery awning, one root in from edge of ,sidewalk.
Councilman Burtashaw, Police commissioner, no report.
Councilman Red Finance commissioner, No report.
Councilman Shelley, Street commissioner No report.
After some discussion the C erk pas instructed to place advertisement in Saturday
and Sunday, edition of the Miami Herald in regard to tax reductions on delinquent taxes
is this City.
Attorney Nelson then read copy of letter written by him to Hon. B+aguene Matthews
Chairman Florida Railroad Commiss'iony in regard to hearing recently held at Tallabassee
regarding depot agent at South Miami.
The Attorney then, - explained results of his recent trip to Tallahassee, as.repre
sentatiwe of the City, at Railroad Commission hearing, regarding agent at this City.
After wbAch the Attorney presented an itemized statement of his expense account on grip,
amounting to $ 66.80, also bills for fees, and drawing up of Legal papers and other expense
to date amounting to $ 78. 15:
Councilman Red made motion seconded by councilman Shelley, that clerk be in-
structed to pay these two accounts less $ 5000 already advanced on expense account.
A poll on above motion was taken and carried unanimously.
Mr. Red then Lead the following resolution, commending attorney Donald M. Nelson,
for his actions in the Cityss behalf while in Tallahassee.

Whereas Ur Donald M. Nelson City Attorney of the City or South Miami Florida, while
at Tallahassee attending a meeting of the State Railway Commission on behalf of the City
and its people, inoident ly learned of a to "Railroad" through the Legislature a bill to
Abolish the City Of South MAMMI and also learned of the existence of propaganda composed
inlarge part 'of falsehoods and half traths, reflecting on the integrity of this council
f, and its members, including the Mayor, which had been furnished the Dade County Rep-
resentatives and Senator, for the purpose and with the intention, of preaudicing them
against our City and its citizens, and whereas Mr. Nelson, did refute said propoganda
by pointing out its;mistatements and 'inaccuracies, and did notify the friends of the City
of the impending danger, thereby enabling them to defeat said bill in the Senate.
Now therefore be it resolved; by the City Council of the City of South Miami,
Florida, that Mrs Nelson did by his timely intercession, perform a distinct act of friend-
ship, toward toward the City of South Miami and its friends and well wishers, and for
which service this council does here and now, for itself and on behalf of the friends of
the City, tender to Mr. Nelson our and their sincere thanks.
Be It farther resolved that this resolution be spread at length in the ainutee
and that a copy be furnished MroNelson.
On motion duly made and seconded, the above resolution was adopted. After which
Councilman Red read a letter of appreciation addressed to :Senator Watson, which letter k2
was signed by all the councilmen.-
After some discussion a motion was duly made seconded that the City Attorney render
an,opinon`'on the matter of delinquent tax publication. Notion carried.
Motion was duly made seconded and carried that council adjourn till nest Tuesday,
June 23 1931, at 8 P. M
