1929-03-05 MINUTES CITY COUNCIL MTG1l March ,5th, 1929. Minutes of the regular meeting of the City Council held March 5,;1929. l President Myers called the meeting to order; all councilmen were present. Minutes of the Council `Yzeetings of Rebruary 5th, '18th, 19th and of Iarch 1st, 1929 were read and approved. Mayor Phillips addressed the council laying out genera economic policies that he felt the city should follow. Councilmen Shelley and Core made and seconded a motion that the books be audited at the regular time for the quarterly audit April let, for the period ending March 31st, 1929. Councilmen -u Bryant, Core, Shelley and Dyers voted Yes; Councilmen Manship, Ross and Smith voted No. The motion was declared carried. Councilman Shelley was unanimously elected Vice- President of the co une i l A petition was presented to the council for their consideration recommending D. J. Red' for the position of City Clerk. Councilmen Core and Bryant made and seconded a motion that the petition be filed. Councilmen Manship, Ross, Smith and. Shelley voted Yee; Councilmen Bryant, Core and I,vers voted No. The motion was declared carried. - Councilmen moss and Manship made and seconded a motion that the City Clerk's salary be $100.00 per month. gou.ncilman Shelley offered an amendment to this motion which was seconded by Councilman Core that the City Clerk's salary be fixed at ",150.00 Der month. The amendment was then voted on. Councilmen Bryant, Core, Shelley and Dyers voted Yes; Councilmen Nanshin Ross and !Smith, No.. The amendment and the motion as amended were then declared carried, Councilmen Ross and Smith made and seconded the nomination of D J. Red for City Clerk. Councilmen Core and Bryant made and seconded the nomination of S Wi Airey for City Clerk. Councilmen Ross and Shelley made and seconded the motion trat nominations for clerk be closed. This motion was carried when out to vote and the nominations were declared closed,. r, Mr. D. J. Red as the first nominee for City Clerk was voted on by the council. Red:was declared not elected. S. W. Airey, 'the other nominee for City Clerk was voted on by the Council. Councilmen Bryant, Core, Shelley and Myers voted Yes. Councilmen Manshp, Ross and Smith, No. the vote being four for and three against, S, W. Airey was declared to be elected City Clerk. Two app-lications for 'position as policemen were read. Councilmen Ross and Manshio made and seconded a motion which was unanimously carried that these applications be filed.; Councilmen Smith and Ross made and seconded a motion which unanimously carried by poll that the salary of the police officer should be :125.00 , per month and that Mr. Poe be reappointed. Councilmen Ross and Shelley made and seconded a motion that un animou.sly carried by poll that J. C. Sullivan be again appointed City Attorney at $25.00 ne -r month retainer fee. -1 Councilmen Shelle and Ross made and seconded a motion which p unanimo %-.sly' carried b poll that `J. A. Councilmen Ross and Smith made and seconded a motion that M.M. Register be reem-ployed on the sanitary truck at $20.00 per week, Councilmen Bryant, Manshipo Ross, Smith and 744yers voted Yea.. Council- " man 'Core and Shelley voted No. A4. I'. Register was declared employed. Councilmen Ross and Shelley made and seconded a motion which unanimously carried by poll that S. W. Airey be appointed City Treas- urer, flax Assessor, Tax Collector, Clerk of the Iftnic.ipal Court and _ Police Officer. Councilmen Shelley and Ross made and seconded a motion which was unanimously carried that a committee be appointed to work with a similar committee from the Chamber of Commerce to look into and work' out a plan for streetcar transportation for South Miami. President Myers appointed Councilmen Shelley, Bryant and Ross to work on this committee.
