No. 170-06-12311RESOLUTION NO.170-06-1231 1 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,RECOGNIZING FLORIDA CITY GOVERNMENT WEEK,OCTOBER 16-22,2006,AND ENCOURAGING ALL CITIZENS TO SUPPORT THE CELEBRATION AS PART OF AN ONGOING EFFORT SPONSORED BY THE FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT THE SERVICES THAT CITIES PERFORM AND TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON HOW CITY GOVERNMENT WORKS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS,Florida City Government Week ispart of an ongoing effort sponsored bythe Florida League of Cities toraise public awareness about the services that cities perform andto educate the publiconhowcity government works;and WHEREAS,city government isthe government closest to most citizens,and the onewiththe most direct daily impact upon its residents;and WHEREAS,the City of South Miami's officials and employees,share the responsibility to pass along their understanding of public services and their benefits;and WHEREAS,throughout the year wehave recognized sponsors fromlocal business whohave generously contributed tothe various functions of theCity;and WHEREAS,Florida City Government Week offers an important opportunity to convey toallthe citizens of Florida that they can shape and influence government through their civic involvement. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA: Section 1.That theCity of SouthMiami joins the Florida League of Cities inan effort to encourage all citizens,city government officials and employees todo everything possible to ensure that this week is recognized and celebrated asthe "FLORIDA CITY GOVERNMENT WEEK." Section2.ThattheCity of SouthMiamipledgeto continue support andencourage educational partnerships between city government and schools. October 16-22,2005 City Government Week is part of an ongoing effort sponsored by the Florida League of Cities to raise public awareness about the services that cities perform and to educate thepubliconhowcity government works.Cities are encouraged toinvolvetheirlocal schools,businesses,chambers of commerce, media and civic clubs in planning City Government Week activities. Cities provide a higher levelof service than most governments,are generally rated higher bythepublic than any other levelof government,and yet,many residents are unaware ofhow city services impact theirlives.Through City Government Week,the League hopes to heighten the public's awareness ofcity government's rolein enhancing thequalityoflifein communities. This year's FloridaCity Government Week packet includes numerous ideas for celebrating the special week. FloridaCity Government Week buttons and bumper stickers areavailableby contacting thePublic Relations Division.Alistof suggested activities,media and PR tips,a sample press release and a sample resolution are available foryour use.Additional resources include the MyCity:I'm Partof It.I'm Proudof It!lesson booklet and the ABCs of City Government booklet.The MyCity booklet provides city staff and teachers with one week of lessons and activities about city government.The ABCs booklet isan educational supplement for elementary teachers,grades 2-5.Hard copies ofboth booklets are available by contacting thePublic Relations Division. Whilewe encourage youto celebrate this important week (October 16-22,2005),some cities choose to host their event duringadifferenttimein conjunction with another planned cityholiday,festivalor occasion.
