No. 019-05-11998RESOLUTION NO.19-05-11998 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,RESCINDING RESOLUTION NO. 199-04-11978 RE-NAMING CHURCH STREET(SW 59â„¢PLACE) BETWEENSUNSETDRIVEANDSW 62nd TERRACE,MARTIN LUTHER KING,JR.BOULEVARD;AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER RELEVANT ACTIONS NECESSARY;PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS,itisthedesireofthe Mayor and Commission oftheCityofSouth Miami to rescindresolutionnumber199-04-11978andtoconsideranewresolutionper Miami-Dade's standard for re-naming streets;and WHEREAS.Miami-Dade County's standard isto co-name streetsinsteadof renaming a street,thus preventing all residents from having togoto the Post Office to complete paperwork for changing their mailing address. NOW THEREFORE BEIT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,THAT; Section 1.TheMayorand Commission oftheCityofSouthMiamirescind resolution number 199-04-11978. Asaresult,itis recommended thattheCity Commission rescind resolution number 199-04- 11978 andhonortheCommunityRelationsBoardandtheMartinLutherKing,Jr.Parade Committee'srequestby co-designating ChurchStreetafterthelatecivilandhumanrightsleader Rev.Martin Luther King,Jr. RECOMMENDATION: Iurgeyour approval of this resolution. MARTIN LUTHER KING,JR.,BY RE-NAMING CHURCH STREET (SW 59th PLACE)BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62nd TERRACE,MARTIN LUTHER KING,JR.BOULEVARD;AUTHORIZING THECITYMANAGERTOSUBMIT THIS RESOLUTION TO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER RELEVANT ACTIONS NECESSARY;PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS,itisthe desire of the Mayor and Commission of theCity of SouthMiamito honor the memory ofone of our country's most influential civil and human rights activists;and WHEREAS,theworksandthe ideals of theRev.Martin LutherKing,Jr.live onandcontinueto seta prime example ofthe difference one man can make in the setting and achievement of goals for the publicgood;and WHEREAS,theCity of South Miami should followtheexamplesetbyothercommunitieswho have designated a public street to honor this moral leader and outstanding human being. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,FLORIDA,THAT; Section 1.SW 59th Place,presently known as Church Street,shall,as soon as authorized by Miami-Dade County,beknowninandbytheCity of South Miami as Martin LutherKing,Jr.Boulevard, and signs shall be made and placed above the present street declaring that designation. Section2.TheCity Manager ishereby authorized tosubmitthisresolutionto Miami-Dade County and/or totakeanyother actions necessary to secure the authorization of this honorary designation andto proceed withthe installation of newsigns Section3.Thisresolutionshalltake effect immediately uponapproval.
