Re:Co- naming of Church Street
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, TO HONOR HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST
REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., BY CO- DESIGNATING CHURCH
STREET (SW 59Tu PLACE) BETWEEN SUNSET DRIVE AND SW 62nd
TERRACE, MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD; AUTHORIZING
THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT THIS RESOLUTION TO MIAMI -DADE
COUNTY AND TO TAKE ALL OTHER RELEVANT ACTIONS NECESSARY;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BACKGROUND
The City has been requested by both the Community Relations Board and the Martin. Luther
King, Jr. Parade Committee to name Church Street after the late civil and human rights leader
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The usual county procedure, we have been informed, is to co-
designate street names so that residents who. live on the street do not have to file a change of
address form with the post office. As stated in the memo for the previous resolution passed by
this Commission, there is hardly a major community in the Country that does not have at least
one street named in honor of this man who proved to all of America that having a dream, and
working toward its accomplishment, can make a tremendous difference in all of our lives.
The youth of South Miami, or even the adults, could have no better role model than Dr. King,
and seeing his name on a daily basis above a street co- designated in his honor would act as a
constant reminder to keep his ideals and his image in mind as they go about their daily activities.
RECOMMENDATION:
I urge your approval of this resolution.
