A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI,
FLORIDA, OFFICIALLY RE- NAMING THE SOUTH MIAMI
COMMUNITY CENTER AT MURRAY PARK AS GIBSON-
BETHEL SOUT14 MIAMI COMMUNITY CENTER;
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Leroy "Spike" Gibson was the first black elected official, in
the City of South Miami, honorably serving as Vice Mayor and Commissioner
during the period of 1976 to 1986; and
WHEREAS, Leroy "Spike" Gibson also was a member of the Harlem
Globetrotters Basketball Team; and
WHEREAS, David D. Bethel honorably served as Commissioner in the
City of South Miami from 1996 to 2004; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North
Carolina, majoring in Elementary Education, Mr. Bethel worked as an educator in
the Dade County Public School system for a period of over twenty -three years,
leaving a legacy in schools such as J.R.E. Lee, Ludlam Elementary, Auburndale
Elementary and South Miami Senior High; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Gibson and Mr. Bethel were great visionaries and
tirelessly carried the torch towards a dream they both shared about the realization
of the Community Center; and
WHEREAS, The South Miami City Commission desire to re -name the
South Miami Community Center after these great citizens, Leroy "Spike" Gibson
and David D. Bethel as a posthumous recognition.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND
CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA;
Section 1. That the South Miami Community Center at Murray Park be
officially named Gibson - Bethel South Mia Community Center.
