A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING
THE MIAMI -DADS COUNTY RESOLUTION CONCERNING
PROVIDING HOMEOWNERS AGE 55 AND OLDER OR THOSE
WHO ARE TOTALLY AND PERMANENTLY DISABLED A
ONE -TIME TRANSFER OF THE "SAVE OUR HOMES"
ASSESSED VALUE IN THEIR PRESENT HOMESTEAD
PROPERTY TO SMALL, LESS EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT
HOMES IN THE SAME COUNTY WITHIN ONE YEAR OF THE
SALE; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South
Miami remained concerned with maintaining the qualify of life of residents in
our community and preserving the investment that citizens have made in
homeownership throughout Miami -Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the "Save Our Homes" provision of the Florida
Constitution, Article VII, Section 4 (c) (1), provides that annual
increase of assessed value of homestead property shall not exceed
three percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower; and
WHEREAS, the City of South Miami supports the Miami -Dade County
Resolution, incorporated herein as Attachment "A ", concerning providing
homeowners age 55 and older or those who are totally and permanently disabled a
one -time transfer of the "save our homes" assessed value in their present
homestead property to small, less expensive replacement homes in the same
county within one year of the sale of their homestead; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND
CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA;
Section 1. The Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami
support the Miami -Dade County Commission in this effort and urges the Florida
Legislature to enact a joint resolution to place on the statewide ballot a
constitutional amendment allowing homeowners age 55 or older or who have a
total and permanent disability a one -time transfer of the "Save Our Homes"
assessed value in their present homestead properties to smaller, less expensive
replacement homes in the same county within one year of the sale.
