No. 085-09-12894RESOLUTION NUMBER: 85-09-12894 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, RELATING TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND DESIGNATING MAY 16, 2009 AS A CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI "CITY COMMISSION WORK DAY" IN CONCERT WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TO CONSTRUCT AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the South Florida residential real estate market is one of the most expensive in the United States; and, WHEREAS, according to the Florida Association of Realtors the median price for a single- family home in South Florida during the forth quarter of 2008 was $234,000; which is approximately 30 percent higher than the national median home price of $180,100; and, WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission call for an increase in the production of new affordable housing and for the development of mixed income housing to allow South Miami residents to continue to reside and work in South Miami; and, WHEREAS, the City's Community Redevelopment Agency reports that over the last five (5) year period, seven (7) single- family affordable housing units were constructed by Habitat for Humanity in the City of South Miami for low income and moderate income households; and, WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity has had a longstanding productive relationship with the City of South Miami and over the years has constructed a total of over thirty-five affordable single - family homes in the City of South Miami; WHEREAS, at this the City of South Miami desires to express their appreciation for the continued efforts and commitment on the part of Habitat for Humanity in providing affordable housing opportunities for residents of the City of South Miami; and WHEREAS, the City desires to assist Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, Inc., in developing affordable housing and desires to volunteer to work side -by side with Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing in South Miami during a special "City Commission Work Day" in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Pg. 2 of Res. No. 85 -09 -12894 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The above Whereas Clauses are incorporated by reference into this resolution. Section 2. May 16, 2009 shall be the official designated a "City Commission Work Day" for the Mayor and City Commission to volunteer and work side -by -side on site with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, Inc., to build affordable housing in and around South Miami, Florida. Section 32. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon approval. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 21St day of April 2009. Habitat for Humanity has indicated that the next available dates would be sometime during the month of May either on Saturday the 16th, 23`d or 30tH Please find the attached resolution required to reschedule the event.
