No. 199-09-13008RESOLUTION NO. 199 -09 -13008 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE ACTING CITY MANAGER TO EXPLORE METHODS OF ATTRACTING SUPERMARKETS TO THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Winn Dixie is the only supermarket in the City of South Miami and it is scheduled to cease operating in the City in the very near future; and WHEREAS, the resulting shortage of supermarkets means that many City residents will regularly be forced to shop at more expensive corner and convenience stores with less selection, or to travel outside of the City to purchase their food; and WHEREAS, supermarkets are a significant boost to a municipality's economy and may employ numerous full -time and part-time employees, the majority of whom often are City residents; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission are very concerned with the potential adverse impact of Winn Dixie's closing on the residents of the City and wish to fill that void by attracting new supermarkets to the City. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, THAT: Section 1. The Acting city Manager shall contact supermarket chains to attempt to attract and assist in locating sites for one of more supernarkets within the corporate limits of the City of South Miami. Section 2. In the performance of the above, the Acting City Manager shall attempt to locate sites suitable for both large supermarkets, like Winn Dixie, Publix or Sedans, as well as boutique markets, such as Gardner's and Fresh Market, as both types of markets can significantly boost and benefit the citizens of South Miami, PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS 3 rd DAY OF November , 2009.
