RESOLUTION NO. ______ _
A Resolution instructing the Manager to send monetary relief to victims of
typhoon Haiyan.
WHEREAS, the City of South Miami and other cities in Miami Dade County received
aid and relief from all over the world after being struck by hurricane Andrew; and
WHEREAS, typhoon Haiyan was three or four times as destructive as hurricane
Andrew, and
WHEREAS, National Public Radio ("NPR") reported that various U.N. agencies are
sending in emergency teams with aid supplies and private humanitarian groups also are
mounting the largest relief operation since the Haitian earthquake in 2010; and
WHEREAS, in the short term, an incredible effort will be needed to make sure
people in the areas hit hardest have access to clean drinking water, food, sanitation,
shelter, medical attention; and
WHEREAS, in the longer term, agencies and communities will need help
rebuilding homes, schools and communication towers.
WHEREAS, we all share a shrinking planet and we must do what we can to care for one
another.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Manager is hereby instructed to send in relief
funds to to provide for immediate aid to the
ravished Philippine Islands during this time of severe crisis to be charged to account number
Section 2. Severability. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for
any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall
not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.
Section 4. Effective Date. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon
adoption by vote of the City Commission.
