101 RESOLUTION NO. _____ _ 2 3 A Resolution authorizing the City Commission of the City of South Miami to 4 request Miami-Dade County to fund and construct a sidewalk on the south 5 side of SW 80 Street from 57 Avenue to US-I. 6 7 WHEREAS, walking, running and cycling are important elements in maintaining a 8 healthy American public; and 9 10 WHEREAS, mothers have been observed from time to time pushing their babies in 11 strollers on the pavement of SW 80 Street; and 12 13 WHEREAS, currently, it is dangerous to walk, run or cycle on the south side of SW 80 14 Street; and 15 16 WHEREAS, according to the Federal Highway Administration of the U.S. Department 17 of Transportation website: 18 "Sidewalks separated from the roadway are the preferred accommodation for 19 pedestrians. Sidewalks provide many benefits including safety, mobility, and 20 healthier communities. *** Research indicates that people will walk for recreational 21 purposes if a facility is provided. Recreational walking is one of the easiest ways for 22 people to get the recommended allotment of physical exercise each day. Moderate 23 exercise, such as walking, contributes to both physical and mental well being." 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Commission of the City of South Miami hereby requests Miami-Dade County to fund and construct a pedestrian sidewalk on the south side of SW 80 Street from SW 57 Avenue to US-I. Section 2. The City Clerk is hereby instructed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Mayor of Miami-Dade County and members of the Board of Miami-Dade County Commissioners. Section 3. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for any reason held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution. Section 4. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption by vote of the City Commission. PASSED AND ADOPTED this __ day of _____ , 2012.
