ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
The loss of pervious landcover (trees,
open space, and bare soil) translates to:
• loss of 131 million cubic feet of
stormwater retention
• Ability to remove approximately
767,000 pounds of air pollutants
annually, valued at $1.9 million per year
• The losses since 1996, equates to a
loss in 291,000 tons of carbon stored
in trees' wood
• loss of 2,300 pounds of carbon
sequestered annually.
• Reduction of between 1 % and 5% of
pollutant mitigation affecting air quality
fvUAMI=DADF COUNTY MAP
RESULTS
Tree canopy declined between 2004
and 2006 within Miami-Dade's Urban
Development Boundary.
The loss was due primarily to
development and exacerbated by
hurricane-related damage.
Miami-Dade's analysis compared
landcover changes from 2004 and 2006
during active hurricane seasons and
found:
1,900 acre (3%) loss in tree
canopy
780 acre (1 %) loss in open space
