APPLICANT'S REQUEST The applicant, Florida Heart Research Institute, a non-profit organization, submitted a Banner Request Application, asking for approval to hang a banner over Sunset Drive to promote the event "Heart of a Chef". This is a food and wine festival benefiting the Florida Heart Research Institute that will be held at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens on April 29, 2012. APPLICABLE REGULATIONS The City Commission at its May 1, 2007 meeting amended the Land Development Code to require approval of all banners placed across a public street. The ordinance created Section 20-4.3(N) which sets forth regulations governing the placement of banners. Section 20-4.3(N) of the Land Development Code states the following: 1. Organizations wishing to display a banner over rights-aI-way in the City of South Miami must submit to the Planning Department a "Banner Request" application at least thirty (30) days in advance. 2. The city commission will review all requests and will determine whether the request conforms to the following guidelines: a. Only not for profit organizations may display banners; b. Banners for no more than three (3) special events shall be displayed at any given time; 2001 c. Banners may be displayed ten (10) to fourteen (14) days before the advertised event takes place; banners must be removed within (5) days after the end of the special event. d. Banner design, color, size, proposed location and wording must be approved by the city commission, and must be submitted along with request. 3. The organization displaying a banner must provide proof of public liability insurance naming the City of South Miami as additionally insured for the period of time banner is displayed. 4. The organization must pay a two hundred and fifty-dollar ($250.00) fee in advance or the actual cost incurred by the city to hang and remove the banner. The city commission may adjust this fee from time to time in order to refiect the current costs of installation. The city or one (1) of the first approved by the city to hang and remove the banners will be the only entities peiforming this task. The applicant has requested that the proposed banner be placed over Sunset Drive at 5800 Sunset Drive between April 16, 2012 and April 29, 2012. BE HEALTHY Summary Report 2011 Overview The Fourth Annual Heart of a Chef: a Foodalicious Festival was held on April 10, 2011 at the Miami Science Museum. This year's event was held in collaboration with the Miami Science Museum for the second year in a row and the emphasis was on heart healthy lifestyles for the family. Some Sponsors included Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Whole Foods Market, Goya, HealthCorps, Le Cordon Bleu, and the Miami Science Museum. The fun-filled day was jam packed with activities to heighten the awareness and knowledge of heart disease by prevention and education. Attractions included healthy food tastings, a farmers market, wine tastings, and heart 'healthy cooking challenges. This year we had Cynthia Demos from CBS4 who was the emcee for the afternoon. The cooking challenges were broken into three categories this year. The first was Le Cordon Bleu VS. Whole Foods, the second was between high school students from Coral Gables Sr. High VS. Miami Coral Park Sr. High, and the professional cooking challenge was the battle of the , 1500 Chefs (Executive Chef Paula DaSilva & sous chef Adrienne Grenier VS. Executive Chef Ben Walanka & Sous Chef Gerard Ladson, Sr.). The 1500° boys in the kitchen prevailed as 2011 Heart of a Chef winner. For the second year in a row Jimmy Morales and his daughter Nora, Co-Chaired the event. Sallie Byrd(VP Development of FHRI), Staei Ehrenkrantz (FHRI), Jimmy Morales (Chair) presenting award to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida (premier Sponsor) Sponsors and In Kind Donors Whole Foods Market -For the fourth year in a row, WFM provided us access to many of their vendors who provided healthy food samples and featured their "Health Starts Here" program. Whole Foods provided 1,000 bags as goody bags for guests. They also provided us with the food for the cook-offs as well as a few seminars and gift cards for our Driven to Dine event. Le Cordon Bleu -For the fourth year in a row, Le Cordon Bleu was an in kind sponsor. They provided over 30 student volunteers who assisted the chefs with the cook-offs. Miami Science Museum -This was the second year in hosting the event at the Miami Science Museum. Wine with the Wildlife: Wine Tasting and Seminar: Wine can be heart healthy, as Barry Alberts from Berries to Wine explains. This year the festival had an added feature by working with the Coral Gables Sr. High VS. Miami Coral Park Sr. High for a fun cooking challenge between high school kids. Participants from Coral Gables were: Richard Alboniga, Leonardo Perez, and Dallia Telles VS. Miami Coral Park: Ashley Alonzo, Julie Diaz, and Kara Perez. Winners won a day at Le Cordon Bleu. High School Competitors Miami-Dade Middle School Vegetable/Fruit Carving Competition: Participating schools: Glades Middle, Charles Drew Middle, Lamar Louise Curry Middle, and Doral Middle. Winners received gift cards provide by Health Corp of America. Middle School FruitNegetable Winners Cook-Offs The Heart of a Chef kitchen was extra hot this year! The first challenge was between Chef Abigail Nagorski from Whole Foods VS. Chef Christopher Pellier from Le Cordon Bleu. Judges had a hard time selecting the winner and declared this challenge a tie. This year Executive Chef Paula DaSilva (Sous Chef Adrienne Grenier) VS. Executive Sous Chef Ben Walanka (Sous Chef Gerard Aubrey Ladson, Sr.) took the challenge. Each chef received a bag of ingredients and were off to create a heart healthy meal. Though both prepared very different and unique dishes, it was the boys who were crowned the winners.
