20I I RESOLUTION NO. 2 3 A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South 4 Miami, Florida, requesting federal funding in support of the Port of 5 Miami Deep Dredge Project; providing an effective date. 6 7 WHEREAS, the Port of Miami is the largest container port in Florida and is a 8 vital contributor to the local, state and national economy accounting for 176,000 jobs and 9 $17 billion economic impact to the economy of South Florida; and 10 11 WHEREAS, in the anticipation of expanding trade and commerce, the Port of 12 Miami has been authorized by Congress to dredge to a depth of -50 feet; and 13 14 WHEREAS, upon completion of the dredging of the Miami federal shipping 15 channel to -50 feet an additional 33,000 jobs over ten (10) years will be created; and 16 17 WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge will allow cargo to double within 18 ten (10) years, providing billions of dollars in wealth; and 19 20 WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge will allow South Florida to grow 21 international trade and commerce exponentially; and 22 23 WHEREAS, the completion of the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014 will 24 require deepening of the Miami federal ship channel to -50 feet to accommodate the 25 larger vessels from the Pacific; and 26 27 WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge is necessary to make the Port of 28 Miami competitive will nearby foreign ports; and 29 30 WHEREAS, the dredging cost is estimated at $150 million, with $75 million 31 already committed by local sources; and 32 33 WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge is considered a project of national 34 significance. 35 36 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY 37 COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA; 38 39 Section 1. That the City Commission supports the allocation of $75 million in 40 federal funds for the dredging of the Port of Miami to -50 feet. 41 42 Section 2.
