7 The City Commission of the City of South Miami, Florida met
8 in special session on Thursday, August 5, 2010, beginning at 7:44
9 p.m., in the City Commission Chambers, 6130 Sunset Drive.

11 A. Roll Call:
12 The following members of the City Commission were present:
13 Mayor Philip K. Stoddard, Vice Mayor Valerie Newman, Brian D.
14 Beasley and Walter A. Harris. Commissioner Velma Palmer was
15 absent.

17 Also in attendance were: Deputy City Attorney Mark A.
18 Goldstein and City Clerk Maria M. Menendez.

31 A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the
32 City of South Miami, Florida, selecting candidates to
33 be interviewed for the position of City Manager,
34 scheduling interview dates and requesting that The
35 Mercer Group conduct background investigations on the
36 City Manager candidates to be interviewed; providing an
37 effective date. 3/5

40 Moved by Mayor Stoddard, seconded by Commissioner Beasley
41 to approve this item.

43 Mayor Stoddard made a motion to suspend the rules in order
44 to stop this meeting and open a Committee of the Whole (COW)
45 meeting for further discussion. The motion was seconded by

Commissioner Beasley and it was approved unanimously by the
Commission.
At the opening of the COW, Mayor Stoddard distributed an
article dated October 2004 by Rod Gould and Glenn Southard
called "How to Successfully Recruit a City Manager in the 21St
Century.
The Commission centered the discussion reflecting on city
managers that have served in the City over the past 10 years.
They decided to use discretion by omitting names during their
discussion.
At the end of the discussion, the Commission decided to
defer this item in order to have the opportunity to review all
of the resumes submitted. They also decided to bring their
individual short list consisting of no more than 7 -10
candidates.
Moved by Mayor_ Stoddard, seconded by Vice Mayor Newman, the
motion to defer this item to be continued at a Special Meeting
Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. passed by a 4 -0 vote:
Commissioner Palmer: Absent
Vice Mayor Newman: Nay
Commissioner Beasley: Nay
Commissioner Harris: Nay
Mayor Stoddard: Nay
There being no further business to come before this Body,
the meeting adjourned at 9:13 p.m.
