RESOLUTION NO
A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami,
Florida, urging streamlined easy access to Florida Power and Light (FPL)
data that reports annual electricity usage in the residential, commercial, and
industrial sectors within a particular jurisdictional boundary; providing an
effective date.
WHEREAS, energy conservation, and overall environmental sustainability has become a
pressing issue for many municipalities in recent years, both for internal operations as well as for
the community at large; and
WHEREAS, it is critical that cities and counties are provided with a streamlined, simple
method to access and collect this data from their energy providers; and
WHEREAS, that from this baseline data, municipalities can analyze performance,
develop conservation plans, and ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
WHEREAS, for community -level analysis, we need access to aggregate level data that
reports annual electricity usage in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors within a
particular jurisdictional boundary; and
WHEREAS, that access to this information would greatly improve the ability for the
City of South Miami, as well as other cities and counties to undertake energy planning, and to
measure the impacts of energy reduction efforts; and
WHEREAS, this has the potential to improve not only the environmental sustainability
of our communities, but the economic sustainability as well; and
WHEREAS, tax - payers dollars are used to keep the lights on, and the air conditioning
units running in government -owned facilities, and finding ways to save money is of the highest
importance; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission urge all consumers everywhere to write
Florida Power and Light a letter such as the attached example marked as "Exhibit A" so that FPL
will recognize that consumers need to know these facts in a manner that is readily available as
well as clearly understood.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT:
Section 1: The Mayor and City Commission hereby urge Florida Power and Light to
provide City of South Miami, as well as other cities and counties with a streamlined, simple
method to access and collect electricity usage data.
