WHEREAS, energy conservation, and overall environmental sustainability has become a pressing issue for many municipalities in recent years, both for internal operations as well as for the community at large; and WHEREAS, it is critical that cities and counties are provided with a streamlined, simple method to access and collect this data from their energy providers; and WHEREAS, that from this baseline data, municipalities can analyze performance, develop conservation plans, and ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and WHEREAS, for community -level analysis, we need access to aggregate level data that reports annual electricity usage in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors within a particular jurisdictional boundary; and WHEREAS, that access to this information would greatly improve the ability for the City of South Miami, as well as other cities and counties to undertake energy planning, and to measure the impacts of energy reduction efforts; and WHEREAS, this has the potential to improve not only the environmental sustainability of our communities, but the economic sustainability as well; and WHEREAS, tax - payers dollars are used to keep the lights on, and the air conditioning units running in government -owned facilities, and finding ways to save money is of the highest importance; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission urge all consumers everywhere to write Florida Power and Light a letter such as the attached example marked as "Exhibit A" so that FPL will recognize that consumers need to know these facts in a manner that is readily available as well as clearly understood. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT: Section 1: The Mayor and City Commission hereby urge Florida Power and Light to provide City of South Miami, as well as other cities and counties with a streamlined, simple method to access and collect electricity usage data.
