Subject: A Resolution of the Mayor and City Commission of the
City of South Miami, Florida, authorizing the Acting City Manager to
allow for the processing and hiring of Reserve Police Officers,
exempting the position from the current hiring freeze; and
providing for an effective date.
Background: The City of South Miami Police Department began a recruitment drive
early this year to reinstate its Reserve Police Officer program. Officers
hired under this program go through the same rigorous screening process
that full -time officers endure.
These officers are compensated at $1 per year and all related hiring and
outfitting costs are taken from existing budgeted funds

Whereas, the City of South Miami Police Department reinstated its Reserve Police Officer program early
in 2010.
Whereas, Reserve Police Officers undergo the same screening and pre - employment .background check,
and training that full -time officers receive.
Whereas, The South Miami Police Department seeks to enhance its Reserve force from currently 4 officers
to approximately 8 -10
Whereas, Reserve Police Officers are paid $1 a year and receive no fringe benefits.
Whereas, Reserve Police Officers augment current staffing and provide for an increased police presence.
Whereas, All costs associated with hiring, training and outfitting Reserve Police Officers come from
existing budgeted funds.
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami,
Florida that:
Section 1: The Mayor and City Commission authorize the Acting City Manager to allow for the processing
and hiring of Reserve Police Officers; exempting the position from the current hiring freeze
Section 2 This resolution shall be effective immediately.
