2hSouth Miami N-AmeHeaCily CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER ° INTER - OFFICE MEMORANDUM 2001 To: The Honorable Mayor Stoddard and Members o the City Commission Via: Roger M. Carlton, Acting City Manager From: Thomas J. Vageline, Director Planning and Zoning Department Date: April 6, 2010 ITEM NO Subject: FEC Ludlam Trail Corridor BACKGROUND During the City Commission meeting of March 16, 2010, there was a discussion of the proposed development of the Ludlam Trail. In the discussion there were statements regarding the possibility of light rail or other motorized vehicles being planned for the corridor. Through further research by staff, there have been a number of studies conducted over the past few years regarding the reuse of the FEC Railroad corridor running between the Dadeland Area and the Miami Airport. The corridor is partially abandoned for railroad use and some of the tracks have been removed. The studies have focused on the use of the corridor as a system for transportation between these two points. One such study is the LUDLAM TRAIL Design Guidelines and Standards. This study focuses on the development of the trail as a pedestrian/bicycle trail only. Another one of the studies is the Florida East Coast (FEC) Transit Connection Study. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential for integrating premium transit service into future plans for the Ludlam Corridor. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION It is suggested that this item be scheduled for a Committee of the Whole meeting for further discussion with Miami -Dade County and other agency officials.
