City commissio n
From: Roger M. Carlton
Acting City Manager
1-kescue Department
Subsequent to a recent terrible incident in which a City • South Miami resident was killed in a
bicycle accident on the Rickenbacker Causeway, I met with representatives of the Miami-Dad,;,
County Fire Rescue department to discuss this situation.
Is important to note from the attached Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Department report (Page
3, Table II) that the percentage of calls from Station No. 14 (South Miami) within City limits has
been reduced from 87% in 2007 to 83% in 2009. While this represents 35 calls, it is a trend to
watch. Stated differently our rescue unit is increasingly traveling outside the City limits.
One additional comment is that our taxpayers are responsible for $3.2 million annually to support
the Fire Rescue District. This item is being place on the February 16, 2010 City Commission
agenda for information and direction if required. There will be representatives from the Miami-
Dade County Fire Rescue Department to answer questions.
