WHEREAS, The Police Department needs new technology to more efficiently monitor traffic and identify areas with speeding problems, WHEREAS, the Police Department has no current system to collect data for traffic safety and provide efficient enforcement, WHEREAS, the total amount for the hest Alert radar /message board trailer and Speed Sentry radar display is $21,985.00 and, WHEREAS, the funding for this request will come from the Federal Forfeiture Account 615- 1910 -521 -6430 at a cost of $21,985.00. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1: The City Manager be, and hereby is authorized to allow these expenditures to be charged to the Federal Forfeiture account 615 - 1910 -521 -6430 at a cost of $21,985.00 with a current balance of $22,000.00 Section 2: That this resolution shall effect immediately upon approval. Background: On a daily basis the Police Department addresses residents' concerns regarding traffic speeding complaints. In order to more efficiently identify problem areas and to properly deploy resources to those identified areas, the Police Department is requesting the purchase of an InstAlert radar and message board and a Speed Sentry radar speed display. The InstAlert radar trailer and message board monitors traffic and provides data with average speed, peak traffic periods, and highlights problem area. The message board also allows the Police Department to provide safety tips and traffic advisories. The Speed Sentry radar display is a smaller unit which can be mounted on any pole, provide traffic data, and is more inconspicuous. It should be noted that the InstAlert and Speed Sentry systems have patents pending and are solely available through Emergency Vehicle Supply (EVS). Copy of patent letter and sole source vendor to the City of Cape Coral is attached and letter currently being supplied to the City of South Miami has been requested.
