A Resolution recognizing the importance of bicycling in transportation
and recreation for the betterment of the residents and for the
environment.
Whereas the City Commission of the City of South Miami adopted a proposed
work program prepared by the Green Task Force by Resolution No. 23 -09- 12832, which
will result in the City of South Miami becoming carbon - neutral by 2030; and
Whereas the City Commission recognizes the importance of bicycling in
transportation and recreation and its impact in reducing the greenhouse effect; and
Whereas the City Commission recognizes that bicycling may improve health,
reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, and an overall improved quality of living
which will be valuable for the City; and
Whereas the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports on its webpage
(http: / /www.edc.gov /obesity /data/trends.html) that about one -third of U.S. adults (33.8 %)
are obese, and that approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged
2 -19 years are obese; and
Whereas the League of American Bicyclists reports on its webpage
(hq: / /www.bikelea ug e org /blog/ 2011 /08 /fta- policy- makes -it- easier -to- get -to- transit/)
that: "The majority of the Federal Transit Administration's grant programs allow money
to be spent on the design, construction, and maintenance of walking and biking projects
that `enhance or are related to public transportation facilities'."
Whereas the City Commission desires to sponsor an initiative to make the City of
South Miami a bicycle - friendly community; and
Whereas the City of South Miami intents to look for grants that will assist in
walking and biking project within the City.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, THAT:
Section 1. The City of South Miami hereby recognizes the importance of
bicycling in transportation and recreation.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
