Res No 119-11-13433RESOLUTION NO. 119-11-13433 A Resolution appointing Dick Ward as the City Commission liaison to the Academy for International Education Charter School. Whereas, the City Commission has great concern for the education of the children who reside in the City; and Whereas, Dick Ward was a Civics teacher for three years at South Miami Middle School, and then an Assistant Principal for twenty years. Mr. Ward was so highly regarded for his dedication to the students of South Miami that the South Miami Middle School named the school auditorium in his honor; and Whereas, the conversion of J.R.E. Lee from an elementary community school to an alternative education school has placed, over the years, tremendous hardship on parents and students in the South Miami community; and Whereas, J.R.E. Lee school closed its doors in June of 2011. Whereas, the City passed a resolution addressed to the Miami -Dade County School Board requesting that J.R.E. Lee School be re- opened as a community school; and Whereas, the City Commission has learned that the School Board of Miami -Dade County has a plan to re -open J.R.E. Lee as a charter school for Academy for International Education Charter School; and Whereas, the City Commission believes that Mr. Ward will be the best person to represent the City Commission at meetings with the Academy for International Education Charter School; and Whereas, the City Commission understands the existing need in the immediate neighborhood of J.R.E. Lee for an elementary /community school. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA, THAT: Section 1. The City Commission hereby appoints Dick Ward as its liaison to the Academy for International Education Charter School. Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. This school, proposed to open in August, 2011, builds on the strengths of both magnets and charters. Utilizing leased space from Miami -Dade County Public Schools, AIE will offer a curriculum in which students are immersed in language acquisition, where the expectation is that they will graduate having learned two or more foreign languages. Using a blended instructional approach, students will have access to a wealth of educational resources via their school assigned laptop. Additionally, students at the secondary level will take mathematics and science courses in single - gender classes. The curriculum will meet the Intellectual, social and physical needs of the students so that the classroom becomes a world of opportunities for student learning and the embracing of the acquisition of knowledge, a second and eventually a third language. Students will have the opportunity to work and learn from classmates of different countries, cultures and backgrounds. Through technology, they will be a part of small learning communities throughout the world working on projects based on interest and participate in classes where academic achievement is celebrated. Students will learn the importance of becoming bilingual and biliterate individuals in a global society. The curriculum will be enriched by having students experience seminars with bilingual professionals, opportunities for academic - related field trips, guest speakers and use of technology enriched instruction. The program of study will create an environment which supports creative and independent academic exploration with real- world relevance. When students graduate from the Academy for International Education Charter School, they leave not only with a solid educational foundation, but they will also take with them a genuine understanding and respect for the international world around them. With an accumulation of language study from Kindergarten, students will graduate being able to read, write and speak in the target world language.
