WHEREAS the City of South Miami ( "the City ") is a municipality that is part of Miarni- Dade County and has a vested interest in the County as a whole; and WHEREAS Miami -Dade County has granted a private company the right to construct a boat warehouse at Matheson Hammock Park which will be over 55ft high and cover an area of 62,000 square feet. Matheson to preserve the wild and natural beauty of the area; and WHEREAS the beauty of the park will be marred by the presence of a building of such size for visitors and nearby residents; and WHEREAS Matheson Hammock Park is mainly comprised of mangroves which is a valuable marine environment that is diminishing in Florida; and WHEREAS the environmental consequences of having increased boat activity in the park from a boat warehouse would upset the delicate balance of the ecosystem; and WHEREAS Matheson Harmnock Marina is already providing services to boating visitors while maintaining clean, eco- friendly standards as a member of the Florida Clean Marinas Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA THAT: Section 1. The City of South Miami, Florida, hereby expresses its opposition to the construction of a boat warehouse at Matheson Hammock Park, as currently proposed and approved by Miami -Dade County, and hereby petitions the Miami -Dade County Commission to reconsider and revoke Miami -Dade County's resolution that approved the construction of the warehouse.
