RESOLUTION.
88 -13 -13906
A Resolution of the City of South Miami supporting the restoration of
America's Everglades.
WHEREAS, the City of South Miami supports the restoration of America's Everglades;
WHEREAS, the two -lane stretch of the Tamiami Trail that links the east and west coasts
of South Florida from
Miami to Naples has cut
through the heart
of the Everglades since 1928,
interrupting the natural
flow of water to America's
most threatened
wetlands; and
WHEREAS, in order to restore the natural flow of water to the Everglades and Florida
Bay through Shark River Slough, 6.5 miles of Tamiami Trail must be elevated in a series of
bridges or a "Skyway;" and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed a one -mile bridge, and
the National Park Service is authorized to construct an additional 5.5 miles of bridging; and
WHEREAS, reestablishing fresh water flow to Shark River Slough is necessary to
protect the aquifer and the Everglades from drought and salt water intrusion; and
WHEREAS, the scenic Everglades Skyway will provide substantial economic benefit to
Miami -Dade County's residents through bridge construction and eco- tourism related jobs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA.
Section 1. That the Mayor and City Commission of the City of South Miami hereby
support the 6.5 -mile Everglades Skyway over Tamiami Trail.
Section 2. That the South Miami City Manager is hereby directed to send a letter within
30 days to U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, Acting Secretary of Commerce Rebecca
Blank, Florida Governor Rick Scott, and Miami -Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization
Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa requesting funding for the bridge construction.
Section 3. If any section clause, sentence, or phrase of this resolution is for any reason
held invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, the holding shall not affect
the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution.
Section 4. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption by vote of
the City Commission.
